Horizon Europe - Cluster 4 Digital, industry and space
Cluster 4 of Horizon Europe aims to increase European capacity in key technologies, in the digital, industrial and space domains. Thus, Research & Development (R&D) should strengthen a competitive, green, digital and circular European industry.
Cluster 4 projects should contribute to:
- a greater technological independence of the European Union; and
- a transformation of our economy, work environment and society.
Calls for proposals
The Cluster 4 work program for 2021-2022 has several calls ("calls for proposals"). These calls have 6 goals:
- Climate-neutral, circular and digitized production.
This goal focuses on the green and digital transformation of the production and construction sector. This goal contributes to a climate-neutral, circular and digitized energy-intensive industry. - Increased autonomy in key strategic value chains for resilient industry.
This goal focuses on research on raw materials, advanced materials and circular value chains. - World-leading data and computing technologies.
This goal focuses on a strong focus on High Performance Computing (HPC), cloud technology and data solutions. Research within the HPC theme is bundled within the EUROHPC Joint Undertaking (JU). - Digital and emerging technologies for competitiveness and the European Green Deal.
The largest target facilitates research on quantum, graphene, robotics, micro-nanoelectronics (Key Digital Technologies JU), research on post 5G communications (Smart Networks & Services JU) and finally low TRL research on the key technologies of tomorrow. - Open strategic autonomy to develop, deploy and use global space-based infrastructures, services, applications and data.
This goal focuses on space research, strengthening our ability to go to space, strengthening the infrastructures, services and applications for Galileo, European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) and Copernicus. It also contributes to Space Situational Awareness (SSA), GOVSATCOM and quantum and to space ecosystems around entrepreneurship. - A human-centred, ethical development of digital and industrial technologies.
The main challenges of this goal are Artificial Intelligence (AI) based on trust, an Internet of Trust, eXtended Reality and systemic approaches to get the best out of technology for society and industry.
